Cortana can be exploited by hackers to unlock Windows 10 PC
A team of IT researchers recently came across a worrying loophole inside the Windows 10 PC. This is a lethal threat to the Windows 10 users even when they have locked their Windows computer system. The hack hack includes activating the voice-command personal assistant Cortana for opening websites on a computer system that has been locked by the user.
How did the researchers discover the issue?
The researchers basically issued voice command and unlocked the Windows 10 PC. A simple physical access to the user’s system can let a hacker to guide it to any website they want.
What could go wrong if the PC is unlocked?
Well, with access to a user’s PC including all the personal data both offline and online; the hacker has basically landed themselves a jackpot. A cybercriminal could use it to open harmful websites. The hacker can even hijack the entire processor for cryptocurrency mining or install a malware.
It clearly points out to the fact that the Windows Voice Assistant program can be compromised by using noises that a human can’t hear. This attack can be carried out easily in a noisy environment where the hacker can just play an audio file to unlock the PC.
In case the hacker plugs in a USB-drive to the target PC, the attack becomes inevitable. Also, the same technique can be used by the hacker to infiltrate a number of computers connected on a single network.
What can a user do to prevent it from happening?
The default settings of the user’s Windows 10 PC has the Use Cortana even when my device is locked as enabled. The IT researchers have suggested that something should be done to deactivate this function to prevent hackers from accessing the PC.
1. In case the user has Cortana search bar on the task bar, they should click it and then click on the Settings icon.
2. Next, they should scroll down to the Lock Screen option and turn off the Use Cortana even my device is locked option.
3. For additional security, users should disable the Let Cortana respond to Hey Cortana option. This will then require the user to click on the microphone when they wish to use voice commands.
